National Institute of Technology, Agartala is a centrally funded institution set up to impart quality technical education at various levels of higher learning. The National Institute of Technology, Agartala came in to existence with the approval of the proposal of the State Government for conversion of Tripura Engineering College to National Institute of Technology by the Union Cabinet on 23rd February 2006 as a fully Central Government funded Institution. The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) issued the official notification for conversion of Tripura Engineering College, Agartala to National Institute of Technology Agartala. This is the 20th NIT in India and 2nd in the North-Eastern region.
The Institute (i.e. erstwhile Tripura Engineering College) was established in 1965 with three branches at UG level viz Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. It was initially affiliated to Calcutta University and had the same curriculum structure and examination system of Bengal Engineering College, like other institutes affiliated to the University. After the establishment of
Tripura University, the institute got affiliated to the new Tripura University. Degree course in Computer Science & Engineering was started in 1999-2000 Academic Session. Three new branches viz. Electrical & Electronics Engineering (now Electronics & Communication Engineering), Production Engineering and Civil &Transportation Engineering were introduced in this Institute during 2005-2006 session. Two more new courses viz. Electronics & Instrumentation and Chemical Engineering were also introduced in undergraduate level from the Academic Session 2010-11. From the Academic Session 2012-13 Bio Engineering at undergraduate level has been started in the Institute.
