Overview

The Post-Graduate Department of Studies in Law was established in the year 1962 along with its sister institution the University College of Law in pursuance of the vision and initiative of Wrangler D.C.Pawate, the then Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad with a view to build a model institution which could in course of time be developed into a leading centre for imparting advanced legal education in North Karnataka. An Expert Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr.S.Govinda Rajulu, the then Vice-Chancellor of Sri.Venkateswara University, Tirupati was constituted to study the necessity of starting of Full Time Law College

and the Department of Law. Department of Law was established on the recommendation of the

Committee. Prof.V.R.Bhat, the then Principal of R.L.Law College, Belgaum, a great Legal Scholar, was chosen as the first Head of the Department.

The Post-Graduate Department of Studies in Law is situated on the Karnatak University’s

Sri Siddappa Kambali College of Law campus, Rodda Road, Dharwad, at a distance of 3 k.ms., from the Main Karnatak University Campus.

Course Eligibility

Candidate must have secured 45% of marks at the 3 years LL.B. or 5 years B.A., LL.B. Examination is eligible to seek admission for LL.M. Programme. In the case of SC/ST/Cat-I candidates, the minimum percentage of marks is 40% at the LL.B. examination. Candidates opting for Labour Law specialisation must have studied Labour Law at the LL.B. Level.

Course Eligibility

candidate must have obtained a minimum of 55% aggregate marks at Master’s Degree of Karnatak University or any recognised University/Institution. However, in case of SC/ST/Cat-I candidates a relaxation to the extent of 10% is provided. The candidate having a pass class at the undergraduate level will be eligible for admission if they have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience or research experience in any affiliated or constituent college of the Karnataka University or any other University recognised as equivalent thereto.

Candidate must have secured 55% marks in the aggregate in the Masters Degree course in law of Karnatak University or any other University recognised as equivalent thereto. However, in the case of SC/ST and the category-I candidate the minimum marks required shall be 50%. A candidate who is eligible for admission will be selected on the basis of an Entrance Test administered by the University
