Overview
Karnatak University came into existence in 1949 to fulfill the Cultural, Linguistic, Economic and Academic needs of the then Bombay-Karnatak region. Kannada was one of the four Departments then established. In recognition of the services of Dr. R.C. Hiremath the Department was later named after him. This Institute engaged in teaching, research and publication activities. Publications include project works, special lectures, translations and University Journals, namely Karnataka Bharathi and Vidyarthi Bharathi, the latter especially meant for student-writers. The Department has been awarded financial assistance under SAP. Many students of the Department have cleared NET/SLET.

Course Eligibility
Candidate must have B.A. with Sanskrit as a Major/ Optional Subject or Graduates who have passed in Sahithya examination conducted by the Board of Sanskrit Education. Bangalore or any other examination considered as equivalent thereto or candidates who have passed the Vidwat/ Vidwan examination of the Board of Sanskrit Education, Govt. of Karnataka.
Course Eligibility
Candidate must have Post Graduation in a relevant discipline or an equivalent qualification with a minimum aggregate of 60% or equivalent CGPA of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India. A Relaxation of 5% aggregate is there for SC/ST candidates.
