Overview

University Law College - a Centre of excellence for legal learning in India was first started by the then Government of Mysore in the year 1948 with Prof. M. Narayana Rao as its first Principal. Initially affiliated to the University of Mysore, University Law College was known as Government Law College. After the establishment of Bangalore University, it became part of Bangalore University and was named as University Law College. University Law College is the pioneer in introducing the Five year LL.B integrated programme in the year 1986 to 87 with the keen initiation of the then Principal of the College Prof. V.B. Coutinho. It has produced many legal luminaries like Justice M.N. Venkatachalaiah, Former Chief Justice, Supreme Court of India; Justice N. Santosh Hegde, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India and Lokayukta, Karnataka State; Justice R. Raveendran, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India and a host of other Judges of High Courts and eminent Advocates and outstanding politicians like Shri. S.M. Krishna & Shri. S. Bangarappa, Shri. M. Veerappa Moily, the former Union Law Minister, all former Chief Ministers of Karnataka as well as others in administration.

Since more than a decade, University Law College has been consistently organizing National Moot Court Competitions besides being actively involving in the regular National Level Law Festivals, Legal Aid & Legal Literacy programmes. Over a period of time the students have excelled themselves in the National and International Level Moot Courts, Law quizzes, debates, client counseling and several other sports events as well.

It has a Post Graduate Department of Studies in Law and has been offering One Year LL.M programme in Corporate and Commercial Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Environmental Law and Human Rights and Labour and Employment Law from the academic year 2014-15.
