The Centre for Medical Physics was created in 2007, as joint venture of Panjab University and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) to utilize technology dependent specialties coming out of the new scientific innovations for the immediate need of the society, i.e. good health. The Medical Physics encompasses into its fold:
Diagnostic radiology physics (diagnostic imaging with x-rays and gamma-rays)
Nuclear medicine physics (diagnostic imaging with radio-nuclides)
Radiation Oncology physics (treatment of cancer with ionizing radiation)
Health physics (study of radiation hazards and radiation protection)
Nuclear medicine is the medical speciality concerned with the use of safe and small amounts of radioactive materials for diagnostic, therapeutic, and research purposes. More specifically, nuclear medicine is a part of molecular imaging because it produces images which reflect biological processes that take place at the cellular and subcellular levels. A typical nuclear medicine study involves the administration of a radionuclide into the body in order to obtain images of the organs, to perform various body function studies and to treat diseases. Most of the radionuclides used for diagnostic studies emit gamma rays, while the cell-damaging properties of beta particles are used in therapeutic applications. Radionuclides for use in nuclear medicine are derived either from nuclear reactors which produce radioisotopes with longer half-lives, or from cyclotrons/generators which produce radioisotopes with shorter half-lives.
The Department of Biochemistry at Panjab University, Chandigarh was established in 1962. The Department offers an integrated five years M.Sc. programme after 12 years of schooling. The students are also enrolled for research leading to the award of Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry. The faculty members of the department are engaged in the research in the area of biochemical carcinogenesis and biochemical toxicology, urolithiasis and membrane transport and enzymes. The department can help the Biochemical, Nutritional and Pharmaceutical industries in providing the requisite expertise in the areas of analyses, absorpion and studies of biological effects of various biochemicals useful to the humans.
The Department is running Master of Computer Applications (MCA) (3 year full time course) and was initiated in 1992-93. Two courses of (i) Bachelors of Science (Honors School) in Computer Science (ii) Masters of Science (Honors School) in Computer Science have been introduced from year 2001 and year 2004, respectively. Admissions are held through an annual entrance test conducted by the Panjab University. Ph.D. program has been started from year 2005.
