The institute was founded in 2001, for the study of law and governance through an interdisciplinary approach. Among the group of members who worked very hard for its establishment, Professor Kuldeep Mathur must be given a huge credit. He became the founding director of the institution. Professor Pratap Bhanu Mehta of the centre of philosophy, JNU was also a part of the initial five faculty members. The institute offers M.Phil, a Doctoral programme and a teaching programme to the students. The institute aims at enhancing the understanding of students in law and governance.

Candidate should have M.Phil degree or Master’s Degree with at least 2 years of Research/ Administrative/ Legal experience in Political Science/ Public Administration/ Economics/ Sociology/ History/ Philosophy or Law discipline and should have secured FGPA of 6.00 in the 10 point scale or equivalent percentage from any recognised University. Admissions will be based on Entrance Test Score, Personal Interview & Viva Voce.
Candidate should have Master’s Degree or equivalent in Political Science/ Public Administration/ Economics/ Sociology/ History/ Philosophy or Law discipline with FGPA of 6.00 in the 10 point scale or equivalent percentage from any recognised University. The Centre for the Study of Law and Governance is a special centre that offers research programmes for post-graduates. It allows for interdisciplinary research for those specialising in diverse backgrounds ranging from social sciences, physical sciences to law and public policy. The centre offers two programmes viz. M.Phil and Ph.D. Admissions to MPhil Programme occur once a year for the Monsoon session and constitute one year of coursework and another of research. One can continue into the PhD programme after achieving the minimum grades required in MPhil. The Admissions into Direct PhD programme occur twice a year for the Monsoon and the Winter Session. The PhD scholars are required to undertake a one year of coursework as well. The faculty in the centre is sourced from academic as well as non-academic fields allowing for students to explore interstices of law, public policy and governance along with any other perspective they wish to explore. Visiting faculty from academic institutions across the world also visit participate in imparting knowledge not only via classroom teachings but through seminars and conferences. The centre is popular amongst students of public policy, law and social sciences with doctors, engineers, administrators and artists also showing interest in the programs offered. The centre also offers space for post-doctoral students. The centre is air-conditioned and has wifi enabled classrooms, computer cluster and library in addition of being disabled friendly. The centre's computer cluster is accessible to students 24x7. The centre also has a spacious garden for students and faculty, facilities for photocopy/printing/scanning and a canteen round the corner. The faculty and peer researchers are very helpful to everyone. CSLG is known for its rigorous coursework that imparts superb learning to its students that makes it one of the most reputed and vied for centre on campus.
