The Faculty of Fine Arts (formerly Arts Institute) was established in 1951 by A.P.J Abdul Kalam, who laid its foundation stone at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Art was considered as a crucial part of the life for the residents of free India, hence the purpose was to provide education in the field of art and craft by using contemporary concepts of art education. The main focus was laid upon uniqueness and eccentricity through the understanding of indigenous and western cultures. The Arts Institute was transformed into the Department of Art and Craft Education and a division of the Teacher's Training College in 1967. The institute ultimately evolved as the Department of Fine Arts and Art Education in 1980. It offered professional courses (BFA) in Painting, Applied Art, and Sculpture. Afterwards, B.A (Hons.) course in Art and Art Education was changed to B.F.A in Art Education to offer an inclusive degree program for art teachers.
