National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), earlier known as National Centre for Plant Genome Research was established in 1998 with a goal to become a premier institute for plant genomic research in the country. An autonomous institute, NIPGR is aided by the Government of India's Department of Biotechnology and has already helped India make its mark in the field of plant genomics. The institute conducts a Ph.D. course along with several short-term courses for students from other institutes. The aim of the research programme is to facilitate understanding of the structure, function and expression of genes, the arrangement of genes on plant genomes and the manipulation of plant genomes with the ultimate goal of breeding high yielding and better quality crops.
