Back in 1962, an Asian Regional Centre for Educational Planners and Administrators was established by UNESCO which later in 1965 came to be known as the Asian Institute of Educational Planning and Administration. The Government of India took over the institute sometime during 1969 and changed its name to National Staff College for Educational Planners and Administrators. As the years went by, a huge increase in the roles and functions of the National staff College was witnessed in terms of research, capacity building and professional support services to the government and therefore, the institution was again renamed as National University of Educational Planning and Administration in the year 1979. The institute is fully approved and established by the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.
