The School of International Studies was one of the major steps that the Indian Government took towards education, after Independence. The Institution was a part of Delhi University, when started in 1955. At that time, it only offered a Ph.D. degree and the focus was mainly on research. When it became a part of JNU in 1970, several other post graduation programs were started including M.Phil, MA in World Politics and the unique MA in Economics with specialization in World Economics(started in 1996). Through an inter-disciplinary approach, it has managed to become a premier institution in the advanced studies of International Affairs.
After Independence, the Indian Council of World Affairs felt the need to train young man and woman in this subject so that they may interpret current Global developments in the fields of Economy, Society and Political Spheres. A committee headed by Pandit Hriday Nath Kunzru worked to recommend its establishment and finally the School began from October 1955 with Dr. A. Appadorai as the First Director of the School. The main aim of this institution is to groom the new generation and make those aware of everything required to represent India in the world level.
