Overview

Established in 1970, the School of Social Sciences in JNU, started with the underlying principle of creating an environment which promotes proper and wholesome understanding of social reality and secondly, breaking the barriers of conventional compartmentalization of disciplines. The course structure and the faculty ensure the ensuing of the inter-disciplinarity and the intermingling different centres of the school. It's a common sight to find a linguist or an anthropologist in the Centre for Historical Studies; or a psychologist, a sociologist and a historian strolling in the Centre for Educational Studies.

Even in a relatively discipline-oriented programme like M.A students are encouraged to offer some courses in the other centres but the aim is at ensuring proficiency of students in the basic knowledge and analytical methods engaged in the various social science disciplines. It is at the research level though, that this inter-disciplinarity thrust of the school takes its full form. The innovative course structure and the unique research projects has forever been amongst the academic milestones of the school, the success of which is reflected in the numerable centres of the school being recognised by UGC as advanced centres for research, under their special assistance Programme (DSA). The centres which are managing DSA programmes are Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Centre for the Study of Regional Development, Centre for Historical Studies, Centre for the Study of Social Systems and Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies. The core principle that guided the development and evolution of initial structure of the School was based on the view that for a proper understanding of social reality, an inter-disciplinary perspective to the study of social sciences was most essential, along with the regular class room teaching. The School of Social Sciences now boasts of the largest faculty of the university.
