Overview

This Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (College) was established by the Akhil Bharatiya Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan in Delhi on the propitious day of Vijay Dashmi on the 8th of October 1962 and Dr.Mandan Mishra was appointed as the Director and officer on-Special-Duty of the Vidyapeetha. Later, a separate society was established under the name of Akhil Bharatiya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha as decided by the sammelan and our late Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was appointed as its founder president. The Founder President late Shri Shastriji played a vital role in guiding the institute on the right path and its development through his perseverance and inspiring nature. Shastriji vowed to do everything in his power as a Prime Minister to develop this vidyapeetha as an international institution.

After Shastriji passed away, the presidentship was passed on to the late Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi and on 2nd October 1966, she declared that the Vidyapeetha would henceforth be known as Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. The Government of India took over the institution in April 1967 and in December 1970 it was renamed as Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. Due to its examplary performance and development, the Government of India, in march 1983 presented a proposal to grant the status of Deemed to be University on this Vidyapeetha along with the Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. The vidyapeetha finally received the status of deemed to be university in November 1987.
