Overview

Horticulture is considered as an instrument of growth as it provides nutrition to the masses. Horticulture in India contributes about 30% to Agricultural GDP. The preference of horticultural food by the consumers has increased to more than 50%. Therefore, this sector needs more recognition by policy makers, research institution and the corporate sectors.
Despite of India being the second largest producer of horticultural crops in the world after China, the productivity is still very low. Since, fruits and vegetables are perishable in nature the losses are very high. Multi layer channels and large number of intermediaries has resulted in inefficient supply chain, due to which the producers share in consumer rupee is only about 30-40%. These intermediaries charge for their services at every breakthrough, the returns to the farmers are meager, while the consumer pay higher price, therefore, the producer and the consumer both are pretentious. Keeping this in view, the aim of the institute is to develop strong rearward and further linkages so that both farmers and consumers are benefited.
The crucial challenge before us is the lack of skilled manpower - human resources. Despite of over 50 agricultural universities in our country which produce about 20,000 graduates, the demand of the industry is still not fulfilled. Two programmes i.e., B.Tech Horticulture and MBA Hortibusiness are being offered by the university ensuring quality human resource, which is essential to compete internationally. After TNAU, Amity University offers B.Tech. Horticulture, emphasizing on Technology of Horticulture and the university is the first in India and probably the world to offer MBA Hortibusiness as demand in this sector from the industry is very high. Despite of Agribusiness programme being offered by many universities, the focus on a particular sector lacks somewhere or the other.
