Overview

The School of Life Sciences has been established with an emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and research in modern biology.

The School consists of four Departments:

1) Department of Biochemistry

2) Department of Plant Sciences

3) Department of Animal Biology

4) Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

Each of the three departments offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes of study. Under Distance Education Programme, the School is participating in two P.G. Diplomas: one in "Environmental Management" and the other in "Medicinal Botany".

Biochemistry is a central basic discipline to all branches of Biology/ Life Sciences. It deals with the chemical nature, function, structure, energetic and pathways of synthesis and degradation of simple to complex biological and/or cellular molecules to understand the various aspects of cellular and molecular functions in development, health and disease with applications in Biotechnology and Medicine.

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Hyderabad, with 13 faculty having on an average of 4-5 years postdoctoral research experience in some of the world’s premier laboratories, offers primarily M.Sc Biochemistry, a two year post graduate degree and Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy) in Biochemistry. The faculty have earned several National and International distinctions in terms of fellowships and awards. It is one of the most vibrant and visible Departments among the Indian Universities, be that in terms of its location, the competition for admission to the M.Sc Programme, student to faculty ratio, teaching experience of the faculty, publications, extra mural research grants/ support the faculty generates from National and International Organizations, and in terms of infrastructural facilities. In addition, the faculties are able to forge collaboration in the new and interdisciplinary research areas such as Nanobiology, Medical Biotechnology, and Systems Biology etc. On an average 40-50% of our students are qualified in their first attempt of national entrance examinations conducted by CSIR, UGC, ICMR, etc., for research fellowships and for higher studies abroad. The Department attracts several distinguished scientists/ researchers from abroad who are ready to lecture or give seminars on cutting edge research areas in modern Biology.

The Department has been supported under UGC Special Assistance Programme and the DST-Funds for Infrastructure in Science and Technology (FIST) Level-II and is marching towards achieving the status of the UGC Centre for Advanced Studies. The foundations for the rapid growth of the Department in the last thirteen years have been laid with its philosophy to provide a well-balanced training to the students in modern Plant Sciences to enable them to choose careers in both advanced teaching and high quality research. The Department offers Masters in Plant Biology and Biology and Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (in collaboration with sister Departments) and Ph.D. in Plant Sciences besides being actively associated with teaching of Masters in Biotechnology, Integrated Masters of Science in Systems Biology, and M.Tech Bioinformatics programmes of the School of Life Sciences.

The Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics was founded in 2008 with a vision to be recognized as an academic department of international reputation and to offer cutting edge, interdisciplinary and most-sought after courses in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. The department has ever since demonstrated an unfailing commitment towards research and man-power development in frontier areas of integrative biology.

The Department has been recognized as a centre of eminence in the areas of infectious diseases research at the interface of multi-omics with both theoretical and experimental approaches. A total of 13 independent research groups are active at the department studying molecular and cellular processes involved in health and disease with an emphasis on discovery of interventional molecules and identification of targets with respect to bacterial and viral infections, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Bacterial genomics, cellular biology, microbial biology, protein structure function studies, bioinformatics and computational biology constitute major skill domains of our research groups. In addition, the Department has an exclusive expertise in generation and analysis of high throughput genome sequence data of bacterial species and harnessing them towards discovery of new gene functions and pathways.
