Overview

The School was established in 1977 and since then has a vigorous teaching and research program, which feed into each other. The teaching is continously upgraded to include innovative teaching methods and newer results that emerge through research are continuosly included in the curriculum. The teacher-student ratio is kept at a level which is conducive for providing individual attention to each student as well as optimizing the resources so that the benefits reach as many as possible. The faculty are also active in the outreach program and have published scholarly texts as well as the new age teaching methods such as electronic media. At present the school has 18 Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 6 Assistant Professors. The current Dean of School is Prof. R. Singh

The faculty are all actively involved in research and guide a large body of students for their Ph.D. degree. Their research interests cover a very wide range of varied areas, ranging from structure of Cosmos to functioning of human ear. The large area can be broadly classified into Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy physics, Laser Physics, Material Science, Quantum Optics, Nonlinear Dynamics etc. The research contributions are also into the emerging interdisciplinary areas such as Neural Networks, Physics of Biological Systems and Cognitive Sciences.

UGC has recognized the contribution of the school by giving it a status of Centre for Advanced Studies. Department of Science & Technology has supported the school through FIST program. The School is also one of the centers for Theoretical Physics Seminar Circuit (TPSC) program of the DST. More information is available on other links. The school actively collaborates in both teaching and research with other Schools and centers within the University, such as SEST, DCIS, CMSD and ACRHEM.
