Overview
The first Indian teaching and research centre for Sociology & Anthropology was established as the Department of Sociology at the University of Mumbai in the year 1919. It is also the oldest department of the University of Mumbai. Over the past several decades, the institution has made various pioneering and notable contributions to the field of Sociology in South Asia. It has played a vital role in the promotion and advancement of sociology and cultural anthropology in India. The Department runs postgraduate and doctorate level courses in Sociology, namely: M.A., M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Sociology. The teaching faculty of the institute is highly efficient and experienced in their area of specialisation. The institute also attracts students from all over the world, particularly from South Asia. This stimulates creative thinking, out of the box ideas, thereby propelling the Sociological and Anthropological research in India.
