Overview

Post Graduate Department of History at the Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was initially established in 1987 as one of the four departments of the Nehru Institute of Social Sciences (NISS) but was later converted into an autonomous Department in 2005. Offering History courses at MA, M.Phil and Ph.D. levels, recognised by the Government of Maharashtra and approved by the University Grants Commission, the department also conducts refresher courses for history teachers of all levels. The aim of the department is to become a recognised centre for higher education in the field of History by inculcating in students an appreciation of history and an understanding of socio-economic and political events in a historical perspective. The goal is to groom students into becoming responsible, socially conscious and aware citizens through the study and analysis of history.
