Overview

Department of European Studies (DES) was established in December 2009 in the campus of Manipal University, Manipal to further the University’s commitment and belief in the sans-border education in the interest of humanity. The objective of the Centre is to develop and broaden the Indo-EU relations by sharing each other’s strengths with the help of educational enterprise, fostering institutional partnerships between universities, leading to a mutually beneficial exchange of information and enhancement of common human knowledge.

Established with a funding from the Delegation of European Union to India, it has grown significantly since its inception in 2009 by offering a Master program in European Studies and starting certificate courses in German and Spanish. Alliance Francaise, which established its chapter in Manipal,is also housed in the same building offering French courses. Hundreds of students on campus from various disciplines are benefitted by these language courses.

OVERVIEW

DES has also contributed significantly by signing MoUs with several European universities. Some of the important partners are Hochschule Bremen (Germany), University of Latvia (Latvia), Metropolitan University Prague (Czech Republic), Universite de Provence Aix Marseille (France), University of Warsaw (Poland), Reutlingen University (Germany), Aarhus University (Denmark), Leiden University (The Netherlands), University of Milan (Italy), Universite de Lumiere Lyon 2 (France), and Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.

DES is also a part of the Erasmus Mundus consortium IBIES (Interdisciplinary Bridges in Indo-European Studies) which gives mobility funding to the select candidates in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral programs.

Department of European Studies was established with an objective to broaden Indo-EU relations with the help of educational enterprise, fostering institutional partnerships between universities and encouraging research in the areas of mutual interest.

It has come of offer a Master program in European Studies, the only one of its kind in the entire country. It has steadily developed with more opportunities for students to spend a part of the program in partner universities in Europe.

The Centre has also moved slowly into teaching of European languages like French, German and Spanish. French teaching is taken care of by Alliance Francaise, which has established Manipal Chapter and is present on the DES campus. A Certificate Course in Spanish is offered by DES in association with University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), Spain with a native speaker teaching Spanish to students on the campus. German language is also offered by the department as a Certificate Course, which attracts maximum number of students among language learners. Along with language comes the cultural flavour of Europe, whichis felt in every program that DES organizes.
