The Tamil University was established on 15th September 1981 at Thanjavur by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The University was instituted with the aspiration for propagating the advancement of learning and research in Tamil language, literature, and culture. It received its accreditation from University Grants Commission (UGC). Tamil University is the result of the foresight of Honâ€™b1e Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.G. Ramachandran. The University has adopted â€œUlluvathellam Uyarvullal" as its motto which means "always think positively and only supreme thoughts." The University also aims to recover and publish the lost cultural elements of Tamil and the historical monuments through systematic research. There are various Departments, Faculties and Centres established under the roof of The Tamil university namely Department of Sculpture, Department of Tamil Studies in Foreign Countries, Faculty of Science and many more. The University originally meant exclusively for pure research, started conducting academic research programs such as M.Phil and Ph.D. in various disciplines. Eventually, the University widened its scope by offering various Postgraduate, Certificate and Diploma programs in diverse fields like Humanities, Science, Commerce, etc. The University works on the principle of imparting the best training to the people residing in India and abroad with the desire to study literature and to conduct research in Tamil Language and Literature. The institution aspires to become a cultural avenue between the people of Tamil Nadu and Tamil Diaspora residing nationally and internationally. The Tamil University not only imparts excellent education but also holds the threshold of its Tamil culture high and above.
