Overview
VIT University was initially founded as Vellore Engineering College on 5 July 1984 by Dr. G Viswanathan, a former parliamentarian and minister in the government of Tamil Nadu. Started initially with a relatively small campus and only three undergraduate engineering courses — civil, mechanical, and electronics and communication — the college continued to progress under the able leadership of G. Viswanathan.
The college was initially affiliated with Madras University. In 1999 Vellore Engineering College was awarded the ISO 9002 certificate for three years by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of the Netherlands, making VEC the first educational institute in India to achieve this recognition. In June 2001 the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred VEC as a ‘deemed university’ and the college became VIT University.

Course Eligibility
a. Ph.D. in Engineering: Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Business Administration with a first class or a minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5 on a 10 – point scale) or equivalent like M.Sc (Engineering) / M.S. by Research. b. Ph.D. in Sciences / Humanities / Languages: Master’s degree with a minimum 60% in Sciences / Master’s degree with a minimum 55% in Humanities / Social Sciences / Languages.
Course Eligibility
Candidate should have secured minimum 60% marks in the qualifying full-time Bachelor' s degree from a recognized University or Institution with good academic performance. Candidate should also have Professional work experience. Admissions will be based on past academic record, work experience and personal interaction.
